1. Brain Building Moments through Songs, Movement, Literature and Puppets for Infants and Toddlers

During this training we will discuss the Components of the Brain and the Sequence of Development. We will link what we learn today to what we do in our programs. With the aid of music, puppets, children’s literature, and imagination, educators will be introduced to and encouraged to create movement-based experiences that will enhance all areas of development for infants and toddlers. This training focuses on fun and appropriate movements for building the body and the brain.

With 1 in 68 children in the US being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (Centers for Disease Control, 2014) it is increasingly important for child care providers to learn more about supporting children with autism. This session will provide participants with detailed information including typical behaviors and interaction styles of a child with ASD and the challenges and stressors to the family with a child with ASD. Participants will examine examples of adaptations to communication, environment, and interactions to support the inclusion of a child with ASD and will receive a collection of resources for use in your early childhood program.

3. Creating Dynamic Learning Environments in Your Preschool Classroom

What does your preschool classroom environment communicate about yourself and the children? Do you enjoy being in your space? How do children and families react to the classroom? Utilizing Debbie Curtis and Margie Carter’s book, Designs for Living and Learning: Transforming Early Childhood Environments, as our inspiration, we will use the day to reflect on the strengths of your center based classroom and work through the struggles you may have encountered. Join us for an interactive, hands-on day examining the ins and outs of classroom environments. We’ll explore the connection between behavior and a child’s environment, and how to make adaptations to be inclusive of children with varying abilities and cultural backgrounds. We will encourage you to draw on your own sense of design, comfort, and aesthetics while being mindful of tight budgets and limited resources. Let’s create captivating environments that nurture children, families, and staff while supporting children’s learning!

4. Engaging Diverse Families

Meaningful engagement with families in an early childhood program supports children's early learning and later academic success. (NAEYC, 2017). Because of the unique position in the lives of families and children, early childhood educators need to examine and improve strategies for partnering with families, especially diverse families. Examine how culture affects your own beliefs around family and parent engagement, and explore ideas about how educators can create a climate of trust by honoring diversity, and communicating in a collaborative way to support the care and education of their children.
