1. Play, Positive Youth Development, and Great Relationships - Making the Difference in the Lives of Youth

Quality relationships between youth and supportive adults are fundamental to promoting positive youth development and the attainment of life skills such as self-management, goal setting, resilience and interpersonal skills. In this training participants will engage in activities that promote the development of life skills, identify the components of the PYD instructional model: activity-based, mastery-driven environment, empowering youth and continuous learning, and develop a plan to utilize the PYD instructional model in their programs. The overall training will be a combination of activity-based learning and lecture to increase their comprehension of the theory behind this PYD approach.

Presenters: Al Petitpas and Ted France
Core Competency: 2. Guiding and Interacting with Children and Youth
Category of Study: 4. Child and Classroom Management
2. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

A child acting out can be one of the toughest problems for OST programs and staff to deal with. Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a systems approach to establishing the social culture and behavioral supports needed for all children in your program to thrive. Participants will identify the areas/behaviors which present the most challenges for their program. Program staff will work in program-based teams to develop an actual plan for modeling and reinforcing positive behavior in multiple program settings, monitoring behavior and measuring outcomes. Program leadership and staff are encouraged to attend this training together.
