2. Children on the Autism Spectrum for Out of School Time Educators

With 1 in 68 children in the US being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (Centers for Disease Control, 2014) it is increasingly important for child care providers to learn more about supporting children with autism. This session will provide participants with detailed information including typical behaviors and interaction styles of a child with ASD and the challenges and stressors to the family with a child with ASD. Participants will examine examples of adaptations to communication, environment, and interactions to support the inclusion of a child with ASD and will receive a collection of resources for use in your early childhood program.

Presented by: Brenda Bernazar
Core Competency: 1. Understanding the Growth and Development of Children and Youth

3. Creative Minds Out of School

In this hands-on session, participants will learn to use the nationally distributed Creative Minds Out of School curriculum as a tool for teaching 21st century skills, literacy (English and Spanish) and STEM content through visual arts education. Each of the units of the curriculum sets forth an investigative, exploratory approach to encountering artists’ tools, materials and ways of thinking. It is designed to go beyond viewing and making art and suggests many opportunities to support Social Emotional Learning (SEL); engage parents and build community within the afterschool program as well.

Presented by: Karen Guillette & Alissa Griffin
Core Competency: 5. Learning Environments and Implementing Curriculum
4. Intentional Lesson Planning for Out of School Time

Intentional Lesson Planning for Out-of-School-Time (OST) will provide an introduction to using curriculum to create lesson plans. Participants will learn about a backward design process and be provided with the tools needed to create OST lesson plans that align to intentional learning goals and objectives. Participants will be guided through the lesson design process, creating their own lesson plans. Positive youth development and intentional literacy support practices will be emphasized.

Presented by: Joan Giovannini
Core Competency: 7. Program Planning and Development

5. Play, Positive Youth Development, and Great Relationships - Making the Difference in the Lives of Youth

Quality relationships between youth and supportive adults are fundamental to promoting positive youth development and the attainment of life skills such as self-management, goal setting, resilience and interpersonal skills. In this training participants will engage in activities that promote the development of life skills, identify the components of the PYD instructional model: activity-based, mastery-driven environment, empowering youth and continuous learning, and develop a plan to utilize the PYD instructional model in their programs. The overall training will be a combination of activity-based learning and lecture to increase their comprehension of the theory behind this PYD approach.
